PORTLAND, Ore. The Oregon Forest Resources Institute board of directors announced today that Ray Jones has been elected to serve as board chair. Jones has served on OFRIs board since 2009.

Jones is vice president of resources at Stimson Lumber Company in Portland. He replaces Greg Miller, Oregon public affairs manager for Weyerhaeuser Company in Salem, who will continue to serve on OFRIs board. Calli Daly, regional state government affairs manager for Georgia-Pacific LLC, was elected vice chair.

Jones has worked in the Pacific Northwest forest sector since 1976. Currently he manages Stimsons nearly 500,000-acre timber holdings in Oregon, Washington and Idaho. Based in Portland, Jones is involved in several industry groups including the American Forest Resource Council and the Oregon Forest Industries Council. He is passionate about forestry education and outreach to the public.

By Oregon statute, the state forester appoints 11 of OFRIs 13 board members from three forest-products producer classes. Two additional members serve ex officio: the Oregon State University dean of the College of Forestry and a public representative who is appointed jointly by the speaker of the Oregon House of Representatives and the president of the Oregon Senate.

Producer class specifications are as follows:

Class 1 Producers of fewer than 20 million board feet per year.

Class 2 Producers of at least 20 million board feet per year, but fewer than 100 million board feet per year.

Class 3 Producers of at least 100 million board feet per year.

In addition, there is a position representing small woodland owners owning between 100 and 2,000 acres of forestlands. Jones represents producer Class 3, and Daly represents Class 2.

OFRI was created in 1991 by the Oregon legislature to improve public understanding of the states forest resources and encourage environmentally sound forest management through education.
